What constitutes a middle art

What does everyday work look like?

As you can see in the following example, the working day of an art teacher is varied. Because in the job you will work through different art styles and teach students of different age groups and with various skills.

07:00 a.m.

You arrive at school half an hour before the start of class. You greet your colleagues in the staff room and look for your place.

07:30 am

With a fifth grade you start a new topic today. It's about fantastic creatures that the students are supposed to make out of rabbit wire and paper mache. First you explain how the production of the material works and then give the children some inspiration on their way. Before starting the sculpture, ask your protégés to make a drawing in the next 2 to 3 school hours.

09:00 a.m.

A seventh grade awaits you next, who in the last lesson has already started to create houses out of thin styrofoam sheets. A previously made sketch of the objects supports them in this. The purpose of this task is not only to encourage an abstract way of thinking, but also to consistently pursue a work over several lessons.

9:20 am

In the next two hours you will devote yourself to level 11. Here you have to create three-dimensional objects. You give the students a free choice of materials. The aim is that they should independently see which material best suits their implementation.

11:10 a.m.

You have another double lesson in an eighth grade ahead of you. The current topic is: Drawing rooms in the correct perspective. This requires a structured and logical way of thinking from the students. Today they continue their extensive work from last week.

12:45 p.m.

The sixth lesson is over and so is your day at school today. After your protégés have left the classroom, you go back to the staff room, pack up your things and make your way home.

1:30 p.m.

You warm up yesterday's casserole and give yourself some time to recover from the day of school.

2:30 p.m.

A little later you go to your desk because you have to plan the excursion with an upper school course to an exhibition. You received the approval for this project from the rector last week. You research whether a bus or train ride is cheaper. You will also look at the entrance fees and possible discounts for school classes.

4:30 p.m.

You have already been able to collect the most important information. Accordingly, you now decide to go to the end of the day.

requirements

  • Middle school; High School

What does an art teacher do?

So that your lessons are structured, you prepare them well at home for the individual classes. You will see how you can convey the various competencies or topics in the curriculum in an appealing and understandable way for talented and less talented students. That means you have to adapt the content to your respective children and young people. Therefore it is not possible for you to follow the same plan every year because you always teach different personalities. Basically, you try to awaken the joy of design and the examination of aesthetic phenomena.
The subject of art is about dealing with artistic objects and images as well as gaining experience with various materials and tools. So you ask your students to make dwellings out of wood on the one hand and to shape figures out of clay on the other. Then again you have to work with a brush and water, oil or watercolors. Depending on the age group, you will also refer to the area of art history and explain works against their historical background. It is precisely in this subject that theory and practice can be optimally combined. The topic of tolerance also plays a role. As a result, the children should not only be able to develop their own abilities, but also recognize the art of their classmates.
In order to encourage particularly talented students and to recognize their artistic skills, schools often hold art exhibitions with the best works. In this case you are part of the organization team as an art teacher. If the school does not have a special room for this purpose, you can look for a suitable location, for example, select the appropriate pictures and sculptures and choose a period for the exhibition. You may also be planning an award ceremony in which the most beautiful pieces will receive a prize.

What are the job prospects?

Promoting creativity and a feeling for aesthetics - these are just two of the goals that art classes want to achieve. If you decide to become an art teacher, your chances on the job market are excellent now and in the years to come. This is due to the fact that there are more positions available than graduates of teacher training courses in the subject.

What qualities should I have?

    What specializations are there?

Instead of working as a teacher afterwards, you still have the option of starting out as a freelance artist. Here you are of course entering financially less secure territory, but you are completely free in your work - whether painting, screen printing, sculpture or photography. With your works you usually turn to galleries in order to be able to exhibit them in the best case and thus present them to the art market. Entering the art scene without relevant references is relatively difficult, but not impossible with a firm will and perseverance.
With your educational knowledge, as an art teacher, you will also find jobs in institutions for children and young people, for example in youth centers or special youth art schools. Here you promote the creativity of your protégés with the help of various courses such as works of art, drawing or even film workshops.
